03: Niceties (Forward dated to the 22rd)

[Daryl takes to the earpieces about mid-morning.]

Alright, so it looks like most of us have been settling in at one of two places. The Hotel and the Warehouse. Some of you have taken yourselves elsewhere and as long you got shelter and can defend it, you're okay.

For those that ain't in the know, the Warehouse is this old building some of us found near the wall on the edge of the lake. Sound walls, one of them iron fences around the parking lot got them spikes on the top. Turned into loft space before everything went the way it did. Point is, we found a storm drain that's bringing water in pretty directly. So we got plenty of that for boiling. We got a fence we can defend. Room inside that to start a garden. Plenty of space inside for them that wants it. Found a bedding store, gonna be dragging some mattresses over from there...

[Not being all together was a little frustrating, but there was so much room and no walkers in the city (that they'd found so far), so it wasn't as worrisome. And hell, if the hotel got compromised, those that were there could find refuge in the warehouse.]

We got ourselves a friend that landed alone last week. Brought me something of a peace offering couple days back, after Newt went and got himself stuck up a tree.

[And the day Daryl yelled at everyone.]

Good sized deer. Been smoking the meat so it'll keep. Most of it's ready. You want some, you can come get some. Plenty to go around and deer's worth the effort of making the walk.

[Anything else he needed to bring up? ...oh, right.]

For those that need to be concerned about it [Alex], tonight is the first night of this month's full moon.

[There. Leadership for the day done with.]

EDIT: I misunderstood how the lake was butting up to the city, so there's been an edit regarding the warehouse location! It's close to the wall that has the lake on the other side. Not on the water itself. Sorry for the confusion.]]

[Daryl had already unlocked the gate, was just waiting for her to get close before he pulled it to the side. It rolled on wheels that didn't squeak anymore. Grease had been rendered down from the fat of the deer and used to help get the old metal moving again.]

We're staying for a long enough haul. Best make it ours fast.

[ Maya steps inside the gate once he opens it for her ]

I guess you've got a point. [ Though her expression suggests she doesn't much like the idea of being stuck here. It smooths out into something pleasant again soon enough. ]

What was it you needed?

[The gate is closed immediately and securely locked. No chances being taken with his people's home.]

Want to make sure some shares get to certain people.

[Daryl moved further in, towards the main entrance of the building. The door was already open, but he'd be closing that behind them once they got inside. The bottom floor had been cleared out a little. A fire pit built toward the back wall where the old heating ducts could be used as ventilation shafts. The pit was mostly to coals now, grey ash over the occasional bright red spot of heat. To the side of that were the meat shares all nicely wrapped up in clean cloth and tied with elastic hairbands around the middle. They made do with what they had.

He had a bag set to the side and started piling the shares in.]

Newt, Thomas, and Padme get these. This is yours. I think that Solo guy's holing up there, so this is his.

[And then a second bag was opened up and shares set in there.]

And these are for Dean and-

[Daryl couldn't bring himself to say 'Castiel' or 'the angel'.]

-his friend. Jimmy. Want you to make sure they know that...

[They were still part of the group.]

...that they got a right to the shares same as anyone else.

[ Maya starts taking mental notes as he starts loading the food into the bags. There’s clearly some background there, what with the odd pauses, but Maya figures it’s not her business. Besides, with the way Darryl flew off the handle over the network the other day, it was pretty reasonable to assume he’d alienated some people. ]

I don’t know who half of these people are. Do you know where they’re all staying?

Just that it's the hotel. If they ain't on your floor, they're on another.

[He hadn't gotten details past 'at the hotel' because it really hadn't mattered before. It sort of did now.]

I’ll look around. [ She smirks at nothing in particular, privately amused. ] I’m used to delivering things with only “they’re around here somewhere” as directions.

[ Ah, the joy of sidequests. ]

[Too bad he doesn't have a proper reward to give her for performing it.

Still, he nodded at her answer.]

Thanks. Don't know how many'll claim theirs 'fore tomorrow. But if there's some left, and you want it. You're welcome to another share.

[ Some of her fellow Vault Hunters might frown on taking a job with no promise of payment, but these were special circumstances. ]

I'll make sure they get them, don't worry.

[Daryl nodded, took in a deep breath, then waved one hand at the building in general.]

Take a look around if you want 'fore you go.

[ She glances around ] You don't happen to have any books around, do you?

Ain't found any paper worth looking at that ain't been rotted. We're in the middle of a desert, but this place gets enough rain that everything that was paper's either molded or been turned to mulch.

Had some luck with cardboard, in buildings that ain't had much water encroach in on 'em. But ain't come across nothing with books. Keep looking around the city, though, might find a library. Or a book store. Gotta be at least one or the other.

[ She sighs, clearly disappointed ]

My search continues. I guess if you find any, let me know.

If we do find some... you think you'll be able to read them?

[Daryl had been studying the stars every night since they got there and outside of a couple constants, he hadn't been able to pin point anything very familiar. He wasn't even sure they were somewhere that used a lot of English before the turn, much less whatever language she read in. Not even being from Earth and all.]

I guess I won't really know until I find some.

[ She says it with a bright smile. Just the prospect of finding a book in this mess is exciting to her. ]

[You know, now that he was thinking about it...]

How is you speak English, anyway, if you ain't from Earth?

[ She blinks a couple of times ] This is a fairly common language on a lot of planets. I didn't especially find it odd.

Far as I know, this is where it started.

[It was as close to asking 'how did it get so common on planets we didn't even know existed' as he was going to get.]

Oh, are you an expert on linguistics across multiple galaxies?

[ There's no heat behind her words, just light amusement. She's not accusing him, she's just teasing. ]

No.

[He snorted, drawing in on himself and looking down. Feeling a little affronted by the tease.]

Just... was taught it developed a few hundred years ago in Europe. Only stories I ever heard of aliens coming here before was just that. Stories.

[ Seeing his reaction, her expression softens. ]

Easy, Daryl. I meant nothing by it. If you were taught that yours is the only world out there, then I can hardly fault your logic.

[Daryl turned his head away, shoulders scrunching further. He sniffed loudly and brought a hand up to rub at his nose.]

You uh... been to a lot of planets?

Personally? Only two. Well, three if you count this one, but my friends are from all over the place.

[Daryl's finger lingered near his mouth and he started chewing idly on his thumb while he watched her, curious.]

They much different than Earth?

I haven't really seen much of Earth to judge against, but I'd say that this place reminds me of certain parts of Pandora.

And what's Pandora like?

[If he sounds like a five-year-old wanting to ask a dozen questions but too self-conscious and shy to do more than one at a time, it's because at the moment, he felt like one.]
