02: Ground Rules (Backdated to the 19th)
[[ooc: Backdated to shortly after this mess with Newt gets resolved and they're back inside the Gates.]
All ya'll talking shit about how we all gotta work together 'cause we're stuck here together best listen the hell up. You want to work together? FINE. First you gotta to is tell the rest of us what hell you can do. No more fucking surprises like some seven foot leopard man!
The only way to pool our goddamn resources are if we know what the fuck they are! And if you can do shit like that, then it's a goddamn resource!
I don't care where the hell you picked to hole your asses up, but if you're gonna talk to me and everyone else about how we should kum-by-fucking-ya, then you best be offering up your skills so we can take full advantage of them.
And don't make runs outside the walls alone no more without telling someone where the hell you're gonna be so we know to keep an eye on you! Hell, I don't even go hunting without telling Glenn I'll be out! You got people to rely on so rely on them!
Fucking hell, people!
[Daryl's angry because he cares. And he hates that he cares.]

I'm sticking with you.
[She whispers her response and turns her head to look over at him.]
I believe in you, even if no one else here does. It's nice if everyone would work together, but we don't have to in order to survive.

[He lifted his head and looked at her, meeting her eyes. He'd been there before. Been there with his family. The three weeks between Atlanta and Alexandria. Where they'd been so desperate and tired they barely spoke to save their energy. Where they ate whatever meat they could get their hands on short of killing each other. They'd nearly died on that walk. Not just physically.
He could look back and see that. Had done so within a couple days of being in Alexandria. That place had done his people so much good. Even if he wasn't comfortable inside the walls more often than not, it was good for them.]
You don't wanna be where just surviving is what gets you through the day. We need more than that. People... if they wanna stay people, they need other people. They need to live.

I know that I'm a liability. I've never had to live like this before, and I don't understand surviving here as well as you do. I was made to talk with people and observe them, to see the potential in them. And I can help you do that here.
[It sounded like a weak offer compared to what others here could do. But she knew she needed to hide how strong and fast she was so that others didn't question what she was.]
We'll find a way to live here. It's just going to take some time.

[The response wasn't immediate. He'd waited until she finished. Listening carefully to her words. The odd turn of phrase she'd used. 'Made'. Like she wasn't a proper person. But she looked and acted like one.
But his words were soft, quiet. Gentle. And firm. The whole time she'd been with him, she'd kept talking as though she wasn't as useful as anyone else. As if she had to keep proving herself. He'd thought it typical kid talk. The kind where they assume all adults don't trust them just cause they're young. Had mostly let it go.
But he didn't want to now. She needed to know her assumptions about herself and how he saw her weren't ones where she was just more trouble.
He brought a thumb to his mouth so he could chew it.]
You ain't. Whatever you are. However you were 'made' as you put it, you ain't been a handicap.

I'm human. I have a heartbeat, I breathe. I bled when I hit my head after the crash landing. I feel things I don't understand, like fear. I also feel things I do understand, like the fact I feel safe when I'm with you. I've cried myself to sleep the past several nights, and wished that I could see my creator again even if he was going to tear me apart.
[She shifted so she could pull her legs in close to her chest. Her head leaned down and turned until her cheek made impact with her knees. And she stared up and over at him through her eyelashes, taking in the feel of her chest rapidly rising and falling as she felt fear at the fact she was essentially admitting what she was to him.]
I think that's called being homesick.

Daryl's eye softened and he offered a tiny smile.]
Don't feel too bad about wanting to see that David guy.
[Yeah, he remembered the name.]
Read this book once... Said a lot of people who been what you... what we been through... they still care about those that hurt 'em. It's not something they can help. Even going back to them when given the opportunity, that's hard to fight. Can't blame them for it when they're already struggling with so much.
Not gonna say the man's worth anything. But you are. Aphrodite didn't do no wrong when she kissed life into you, whatever you was before now.

However things were before, it doesn't matter here. Even with all the death and terrible things around us, there's still the chance to start over.
[And if he thought she was worth something and there wasn't anything wrong with her then she could get past her fears and insecurities about what and who she used to be. Her smile widened and she leaned in like she was going to hug him. She remembered what had happened the last time she had though and stopped short. Her hand moved to quickly press against the top of his instead.]
